Stability Balls in Elementary Schools

Junk to Funk

School:    Mildred L. Day Date:       Fall 2011 Amount:  $1750.00 Junk to Funk is a unique combination of visual and performance art, fashion, sustainability education, interactive activities and entertainment.  The program encourages positive behavioral change by asking audiences to reconsider their consumption and disposal choices in an innovative and playful way.

Mobile Food Carts

Mildred L. Day Library

Date:  Fall 2010 Amount:  $4,000   The library at the Arundel elementary school will receive new books and professional oversight to support and enhance the RSU#21 curriculum for K-5 students.

Metacognitive Thinking

Date:  Fall 2010 Amount:  $$6,197.31   A Pilot Program will be developed to teach Metacognitive Higher Order Thinking Skills in third grade. Today’s students must be able to read and process large amounts of material; the program will put together a curriculum that will teach critical thinking skills at an earlier age.

Outdoor Classroom

Date:  Fall 2010 Amount:  $1,250   A three-season classroom will be constructed at Mildred L. Day school in Arundel to provide students and teachers with an opportunity to use the environment to support educational activities, including those in allied arts.

Spanish Recording Devices

Date: Spring 2010 Amount: $2,097 K through 5 students will learn Spanish phrases through signs in classrooms paired with recorded messages that provide correct pronunciation.

ALEKS

Date: Spring 2010 Amount: $1200 Elementary students who excel in math will have an accelerated on-line math program to challenge them in mathematical concepts, abstract reasoning and computations.

Heartwood College of Art

Date: Winter 2010 Amount: $11,900.00 Fifth graders from RSU #21 went to Heartwood College of Art to receive training in varied art media ranging from photography and pastels to jewelry and paper making.

Science Companion CDs

Date: Winter 2010 Amount: $900.00 Fourth– and fifth-grade instructors received the digital component of the “Science Companion” curriculum kits, allowing them to integrate six units of study with existing interactive whiteboards.

GPS Units

Date: Winter 2010 Amount: $900.00 Mildred L. Day students are introduced to GPS technology and geocaching during physical education classes with funding for purchasing GPS units and geocaching supplies.

Keyboarding Software

Date: Winter 2010 Amount: $1,260.00 K–5 Macintosh computer labs received software that helps children learn keyboarding in a fun way; the software allows the tracking of student progress as well.

Summer at Risk

Date: Winter 2010 Amount: $6,075.00 Third-grade students identified as being at risk of not meeting New England Comprehensive Assessment Program standards attended school for ten half-days in August to work on math and literacy.

Handwriting Without Tears

Date: Winter 2010 Sponsor: Tracy Mason Amount: $5,613.20 The EFKA supported this program last year for K – 1 classes. In this second phase, the program is expanded to include second grade teachers, RTI tutors, Title 1 and special education staff.
