New Instruments Boost Mildred L. Day Band Program
The happy faces in this picture belong to 4th and 5th graders at Mildred L. Day school, who are learning to play flutes and clarinets with a little help from the Education Foundation. Band Instructor Sandra Sharood approached the Ed Foundation with a request for a grant to add 4 flutes and 4 clarinets to the band at the elementary school. The band now includes 19 members, allowing the children to experience being in a real band.
“The students really see themselves as a band rather than a collection of students learning to play instruments,” Sharood said. “We are able to play band music written with different parts and harmony.”
Sharood said the band will play at a community meeting in the spring, and will perform for parents and fellow students several times a year to acquaint them with the band and to build a band culture.
