New Instruments Boost Mildred L. Day Band Program

20131210_115859The happy faces in this picture belong to 4th and 5th graders at Mildred L. Day school, who are learning to play flutes and clarinets with a little help from the Education Foundation.  Band Instructor Sandra Sharood approached the Ed Foundation with a request for a grant to add 4 flutes and 4 clarinets to the band at the elementary school.  The band now includes 19 members, allowing the children to experience being in a real band.

“The students really see themselves as a band rather than a collection of students learning to play instruments,” Sharood said.  “We are able to play band music written with different parts and harmony.”

Sharood said the band will play at a community meeting in the spring, and will perform for parents and fellow students several times a year to acquaint them with the band and to build a band culture.
