The Adventure Course at the Middle School of the Kennebunks
[add_slideshow slideshowcaption=”Students and teachers take learning outdoors and into their hands” align=”right”]The adventure course at the Middle School of the Kennebunks is a low ropes course that requires students to trust one another, to strategize, to communicate, to take risks, and sometimes even to fail – all while having fun! The course presents physical as well as mental challenges on tasks with names such as Lord of the Rings, Wild Woosey, and Multi-swing, Beam and Spider Web. The adventure course at MSK is used by classes, sports teams, student council, and other groups.
Adventure education is valued for developing different skills than those commonly used in the classroom and for building relationships of respect and trust among students who might not normally interact with one another. The adventure course also supports the International Baccalaurate learner profile through physical challenges that help students build confidence, critical thinking skills, and also respect for each other and their environment. Students and staff spent years planning the course, including extensive work constructing models of course elements. Students also helped to prepare the wooded area outside the school for construction of the course.
The MSK adventure course is one more tool helping RSU#21 students to strive for excellence.
